Alfred H Knight Awards Students: Promoting STEM Careers
At Alfred H Knight, we recognise the importance of inspiring and setting expectations for the next generation of scientists. We value the fresh perspectives and potential that young people bring to the industry. This is why we’re proud to partner with Liverpool Life Sciences UTC, a local school specialising in science and healthcare education.
As part of our partnership with Liverpool UTC, our experts deliver hands-on experience to students. We create an open, welcoming environment where students can ask questions, explore the industry, and discover the career pathways available at Alfred H Knight.
Most recently, in May, colleagues from Alfred H Knight visited the Liverpool Life Sciences UTC facility to present awards to students who completed a challenge during a recent event at AHK headquarters.

BUILDING ON PARTNERSHIPS AND INSPIRING FUTURE SCIENTISTS
In November, we hosted a tailored event to present the diverse opportunities available within the industry. Designed to give students a deeper insight into the sector, the event highlighted our available apprenticeship and graduate programmes. Furthermore, it also offered an idea of working at AHK post-education.
This interactive event included:
- A guided tour of the John Knight Laboratory. Here, students explored the general chemistry, precious metals and X-ray departments, along with analytical instruments and techniques.
- ‘Hub talks’ with current apprentices and graduates, allowing students to hear first-hand about their experiences and pathways.
- A hands-on laboratory practical experience, where students got to experience real analytical work in a functioning laboratory environment.

THE CHALLENGE
To conclude the day, students were challenged to answer a series of questions on the topic of ‘Lab Metalytics’. Those who answered correctly won an AHK Achievement of Excellence award and earned a week-long placement in our XRF Department!

Chemistry Awards from last year (2024)
“It was a real pleasure to catch up with Dr John Dyer and observe the students as they tackled a laboratory practical, determining the concentration of an unknown solution by producing a standard calibration curve. Congratulations to everyone, and a special well done to the winners, who were each awarded an AHK Achievement of Excellence Award.”
