ICP Senior Spectroscopist

What is on offer?

Alfred H Knight are looking to recruit an experienced ICP Senior Spectroscopist to support operations at our main laboratory in Prescot, Merseyside. ICP Senior Spectroscopist will be responsible to the ICP Manager & Senior Management for the continuing development and technical support of the (currently) six ICP-OES spectrometers and one ICP-MS spectrometer on site.  Additionally, the successful candidate may be asked to remotely support spectrometers located globally across the AHK group.

The ICP spectrometers are run by a dedicated team of technicians who analyze the large variety of sample types submitted by our wet chemistry laboratories on a daily basis. This position is primarily responsible for providing technical assistance in troubleshooting issues on existing methodology and assisting in the creation of new instrumental method, taking into account quality control, internal standardization, interference correction, and method optimization.

Do you have what it takes?


  • Troubleshooting existing instrumental methodology.
  • Creation and validation of new instrumental methods.
  • Maintain record keeping in such a way that work is clearly auditable & traceable, within the guidelines of AHK’s 17025 accreditation.
  • Undertaking other duties of an appropriate nature, in consultation with the UK Laboratory Manager, ICP Manager, ICP Operations Manager (and/or their deputies).
  • Maintain a professional standard and appearance during office hours, while promoting the company and when on company business.
  • Ensure the company’s Health & Safety policy is being applied within all laboratory areas under the post holder’s purview, informing the Laboratory Director of serious breaches or systematic failure of policy.

Required Skills, Competencies and Knowledge

Person Specification

  • Substantial hands on experience with an ICP-OES Spectrometer.
  • Substantial hands on experience with and ICP-MS Spectrometer.
  • Experience creating and validating instrument methods.
  • Strong team player with a collaborative approach and work ethic who can demonstrate a diplomatic and measured approach through leading by example and encouraging others.
  • Ability to demonstrate literacy and to be numerate.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work under own initiative in a dynamic work environment with changing daily priorities.
  • The ability to develop the skills and knowledge within the laboratory to create an environment where knowledge sharing is a priority.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Read, understand and follow work instructions and guidelines accurately
  • Able to focus on meeting given deadlines.
  • Able to communicate effectively in a range of different formats.
  • Proven time management skills, quality-driven and proactive.

Required Work Experience

  • Substantial hands-on, extensive, experience with an ICP-OES Spectrometer.  Modern Agilent or Thermo instruments are preferred, though not essential.
  • Substantial hands-on, extensive, experience with an ICP-MS Spectrometer.  Modern Agilent instruments preferred, though not essential.
  • Addition spectrometer knowledge (AAS, Spark-OES etc..) would be beneficial, though again, not essential.
  • Experience working in the materials assaying industry would be beneficial

Required Qualifications

    • A minimum GCSE equivalent education, though science degree is preferable.
