Laboratory/QC Chemist

We have an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory/QC Chemist to join the Analytical Services team based in Rustenburg.

Reporting to the Senior Chemist- Technical, the primary functions of your role, in line with the Responsibilities are outlined below:

Responsible for giving effective hands on technical support to both the Senior Chemist –Technical and Laboratory Manager in accordance with Company Policies, Procedures and ISO 17025:2017 requirements within Alfred H Knight South Africa Rustenburg Laboratory, for production of results to a high degree of precision and accuracy and ensuring that an effective and high-quality analytical service is provided.

Responsibilities

  • Developing, validating and reviewing of all analytical procedures in line with best international practices to ensure most cost-effective and fit for purpose methodologies are in use in the Laboratory
  • Registration and investigation of all Customer complaints and Non-Conformances and ensuring that relevant records are completed accordingly as per procedure, preventative and corrective actions are implemented and monitored
  • Developing, implementing and maintaining of the QMS in accordance with the requirements of ISO 17025:2017 and the SANAS requirements
  • Providing technical advice and support to the production team as required on technical or related operational problems, leading and guiding in a ‘trouble shooting’ process.
  • Investigating any repetitive technical problems relating to day-to-day Rustenburg Laboratory analytical procedures or potential technical problems
  • Compile QC data for Rustenburg Laboratory and review SOPs on a cyclic basis, to ensure that quality standards are being maintained and that the methods are current and validated
  • Maintaining the equipment management plan that ensures the availability and performance in a working and calibrated state, organizing robust maintenance and calibrations plans as per equipment supplier recommendations

To be successful at Alfred H Knight, you will need to display the following:

Required Knowledge

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 requirements
  • Good statistical knowledge for data evaluation and validation
  • Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Quality: ‘Right first time’ approach, continually looking for improvements and strong problem-solvers, high level of attention to detail is key within this role.
  • Managing uncertainty: Handles pressure and ambiguity well, exercises good judgment and handles challenges in a mature manner.
  • Critical thinking: Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Team Player / Interpersonal: Builds and maintains positive working relationships with their own team and more widely

Required Qualifications and work experience 

  • Grade 12 (with Maths, Chemistry and Science)
  • Analytical Chemistry Diploma or other appropriate Tertiary Qualification
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a production analytical chemistry laboratory with proven track record of fire assay, sample preparation, classical wet chemistry AND ICP-OES.
