Laboratory Technician Apprentice

WHAT IS ON OFFER

Alfred H Knight has an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Technician Apprentice to start a Level 7 apprenticeship whilst working within our Dundonald Laboratory based in Dundonald, South Ayrshire.

In this role, you will perform effective and high quality analysis in our state of the art analytical laboratory on client’s coal, biomass and waste commodity samples, following given methods and procedures to produce accurate and timely analytical results.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensuring at all times that a high degree of accuracy and precision is applied to methods and procedures through incorporating and promoting good laboratory practice principles.
  • Responsible for ensuring that work throughput is followed in accordance to documented methods and procedures and as per the correct quality focused specifications.
  • Ensuring relevant equipment checks have been completed and deemed fit for purpose.
  • Advising the Senior Lab Technician or Deputy Lab Manager of repetitive problems in connection with training and development objectives that manifest during the execution of day-to-day analytical methods and procedures and associated standard operating practices.
  • Maintaining records and laboratory data in agreement with the Deputy Lab Manager such that work is clearly and easily auditable and traceable.
  • Processing QC and analytical data unsupervised in preparation of results being checked and authorised prior to reporting.
  • Assisting the Lab Manager in setting out and implementing extended training programmes that will ensure that the post holder is sufficiently well trained to carry out their analytical responsibilities accurately and efficiently.
  • Assisting the Lab Manager in updating the post holders training record at every training milestone, while maintaining competency training records as a record of achievement beyond the initial 12 months training and development.
  • Take full responsibility for your own training records.
  • Undertaking other duties of an appropriate nature in consultation with the Senior Lab Technician.
  • Ensuring that all laboratory work areas and workstations are kept clean and tidy.
  • Prepared to travel both nationally and internationally if necessary.
  • Ensuring compliance with all Company Health, Safety & Environmental procedures as instructed.
  • Maintaining a professional standard and appearance at all times during working hours and whilst promoting the company on company business.

 

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Good numeracy skills
  • IT skills – Microsoft and Google applications

 

Required Competencies

  • Highly organised with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of quality in an analytical setting.
  • Easily adaptable to change and works well unsupervised under pressure.

 

Qualifications

  • Grade C Highers in Maths, English and 2 Science Subjects.
