AHK has an opportunity for a Senior Chemist to join our Analytical services Team Based in Rustenburg, South Africa. The Senior Chemist – Production will be responsible for the following:
To manage all production related aspects (from Sample Preparation, Fire Assay to WetChem) of Rustenburg Laboratory in accordance with Company Policies, Procedures and ISO 17025:2017 requirements
To ensure the generation and production of analytical results to a high degree of precision and accuracy and ensuring that a cost effective and high-quality analytical service is provided to clients within stipulated turnaround times
To effectively manage all production and safety risks to ensure smooth production continuity at all times
To ensure production personnel competency and performance is consistently reviewed and appraised at all times and that records thereof are easily retrievable
To ensure all non-conformances, customer complaints are effectively closed out and recurrence is prevented

Required Knowledge and Work Experience
At least 5 years of experience in a production analytical chemistry laboratory with a proven track record of fire assay, ICP-OES and a strong understanding of ISO17025 system implementation.
Matric with Maths and Physical Science

The ability to train subordinates
Ability to present information both written and verbally
Must be computer literate – Microsoft office suite
Commitment to safe work practices

The Senior Chemist-Production will be responsible for the most cost-effective management of all production related aspects from sample preparation, fire assay, WetChem and instrument analysis to ensure continuous satisfaction of both current and future customers.
The Senior Chemist-Production will be responsible for effective utilization of both time and resources to meet agreed quality standards and customer turnaround times.
The Senior Chemist-Production will be responsible for provision of secondary on the job internal training to all production employees and ensure that continuous competency assessments are carried out and gaps are addressed through training needs analysis.
To provide ad hoc support to Laboratory Technical team on specific quality/technical problems that may arise and help with the resolution of any outstanding issues and put corrective and preventative measures in place for continuous improvement.
The Senior Chemist-Production will proactively carry out data analysis to identify repetitive technical problems relating to day-to-day analytical procedures and standard operating practices for resolution.
The Senior Chemist-Production will be responsible for identifying and implementing both cost-saving and production improvement initiatives across value chain from Sample Preparation, Fire Assay to WetChem.
To ensure that the Laboratory quality, production and safety-related objectives are achieved and maintained.
Whilst the Senior Chemist-Production will be reporting directly to the Laboratory Manager, there will inevitably be occasions when you may be required to collaborate with and offer support to the Laboratory Technical Team and other AHK staff as applicable.
Operationally responsible to the Laboratory Manager for.
Planning, organising and coordinating laboratory production work in all Sections in order to meet or exceed customer expectations in terms of quality and turnaround time.
Implement and maintain the quality management system for the Laboratory in order to produce accurate, precise and valid results to meet customer expectations.
Scrutinise all the results of analysis done in the laboratory for quality and ensures customer satisfaction.
Resolve problems reported by subordinates through discussions and on the spot investigation and instructing accordingly before escalating to the Laboratory Manager.
Process the more complex non-routine type of analyses which require developed knowledge and acquired tested skills to validate the analytical results before release.
Developing, implementing and maintaining systems for ensuring a clear chain of custody for samples and documents in order to achieve traceability and prevent loss.
Ensuring the confidentiality of all results at all times.
Implementation, maintenance and improvement of the ISO17025:2017 quality management system within the Laboratory sections and maintaining record keeping within the Laboratory, such that work is clearly and easily auditable, and traceable within the guidelines of the 17025 standards.
Implement the first-line maintenance of equipment and measuring instruments in order to identify sources of unwanted contamination and malfunctions that affect accuracy by ensuring that daily equipment checklists are completed and reviewed at all times.
Assisting the Laboratory Manger with the information required for long-term planning and forecasting of analytical services.
Attending to both audit and in-process non-conformances and customer complaints timeously and ensuring effective implementation of corrective and preventative actions in liaison with the Laboratory Technical Team, Quality Department and the Laboratory Manager.
Participating in loss control inspection programmes using principles of planned task observation and proactively prevent non-conformances.
Participating in liaison with the Laboratory Technical team in group quality initiatives, round robins and proficiency testing schemes.
Supporting the Laboratory Manager in organizing and participating in client visits and general client-based technical discussions.
Reviewing on a cyclic basis in liaison with Laboratory Technical Team and Quality Department, Laboratory Quality Management System documentation to ensure that quality standards are maintained and that methods are current and reflect the procedures applied throughout the laboratory.
Write weekly and monthly laboratory performance reports covering safety, sample throughput, quality (QC performance, repeats and customer complaints), cost, people and equipment.
Write comprehensive reports in support of investigation projects including recommendations to enhance productivity or improve quality assurance.
Ensuring that monthly count sheets for invoicing are prepared for the Laboratory Manager’s approval.
Reviewing the performance of subordinates in order to ensure high levels of competence, identify training needs and adequacy of personnel in their assigned duties.
Participating in disciplinary and grievance meetings in line with Company procedure and in consultation with Human Resource.
Participating in the interview and recruitment process of personnel with prior approval from the Laboratory Manager.
Ensuring that the Company’s induction procedure is followed for new employees and that all documents relating to an employee’s induction are kept up-to-date.
Monitoring staff attendance and punctuality in order to achieve high levels of productivity and limit the necessity for overtime work.
To promote and maintain high levels of employee discipline by counseling, reprimanding and taking timeous action in line with company procedures and policies.
Holding regular meetings with staff ensuring that the workforce is sufficiently informed, motivated, skilled, and properly trained to meet the operational needs of the business. It is the post holder’s responsibility to inform the Laboratory Manager of continual resourcing difficulties and/or operational problems.
Maintain a professional standard and appearance during office hours and while promoting the company when on company business.
Reporting any incidents during working hours within 12 hours of the incident to the Laboratory Manager and carrying out incident/accident investigations.
Observing and complying with operational requirements and safety regulations applicable to your work area. Non-compliance will be considered to be serious misconduct, and the Employer is hereby indemnified by the Employee towards any liability resulting from an injury or illness as a result of non-compliance with safety measures.
Carrying out other ad hoc duties of an appropriate nature as may be requested by the Laboratory Manager from time to time.
ND Analytical Chemistry or University related chemistry degree
Science degree preferable.
