GAVIN’S INTRODUCTION TO THE TESTING AND INSPECTION INDUSTRY

“The TIC (Testing, Inspection, and Certification) industry was something that really appealed to me”, he explained. “Its global reach and focus on quality and integrity aligned closely with my values, providing the perfect environment to apply my experience in a meaningful way.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TECHNICAL MANAGER

Every day brings a new challenge. One day, Gavin is on-site auditing sampling methods, the next he’s providing strategic insights to commercial teams or representing AHK at international standards meetings.

“Bespoke reporting to reflect an audit or project is often needed. Other days, I could be on-site depending on what needs my attention. I also support the Commercial and Marketing teams with strategic and technical input across different markets when required.”

When he’s not doing his day-to-day, Gavin can often be found representing AHK at industry group meetings and events, through his work within ISO Technical committees 238, 300 and ASTM D05.

CHALLENGES AND TRENDS SHAPING THE SECTOR

Working in solid fuels sampling and testing means navigating constant challenges, particularly surrounding fuel quality. “Laboratory analysis is only as good as the sample”, Gavin adds.

“There’s an ongoing focus on compliance when it comes to sampling, preparation, and analysis within the solid biofuels and waste-to-energy sectors.

Each scenario that presents itself offers its own challenges, whether it be a compliant sample mass and preparation to an issue with results that don’t meet specification, which could have a financial impact on the client contractually.”

“With how quickly our industry changes, there’s never a dull day. Moving forward, I see the inclusion of EFW into the UK ETS as a challenge and opportunity for AHK to support our clients in the constantly evolving landscape of energy from waste.”

A major part of his role involves direct client support, whether through training, problem-solving, methodology development or revision. “Attending industry group meetings and events allows me to keep up to date with ongoing news and data trends that enable us to support our clients.”

Gavin’s involvement in standardisation, representing AHK and the UK through British Standards (BSI) PTI/017, ensures clients’ concerns are heard in the development of best practices.
