Real-World Science Careers: Liverpool UTC Students Visit AHK

As part of our ongoing partnership with Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and our commitment to lifelong learning, Alfred H Knight (AHK) welcomed students to our Liverpool headquarters. The goal was to showcase real-world science careers and inspire future pathways in STEM.

The visit took the students beyond the classroom, offering an immersive experience that included:

  • Group discussions regarding STEM pathways
  • Interactive learning sessions
  • A guided laboratory tour

By giving students first-hand exposure to how science is applied in a professional environment, this event highlighted how classroom learning connects directly to professional roles.

From Student to Scientist: A Real-World Science Career Journey

One of the most powerful moments of the day was hearing from Kira Little, now AHK’s group ICP apprentice.

Just over a year ago, Kira attended this same visit as a Liverpool Life Sciences UTC student, and today, she is part of the business. This is a full-circle moment, demonstrating how students can progress from education into real-world science careers.

“It is amazing how not too long ago I was sitting in those seats, unsure of my path in life and what to do when it came to my career. AHK definitely helped me see that apprenticeships are an excellent way forward, showing me that there are so many opportunities to work in science. I’m so glad I got the chance to speak to aspiring students who want a career in science.” — Kira Little, Group ICP Apprentice.

They shared their personal journeys into STEM, speaking candidly about balancing work and study. They also touched on the realities of laboratory-based roles and the value of learning in a real working environment.

Following the discussion, Tricia, Apprenticeship Tutor at AHK, led an interactive presentation. She explained apprenticeship structures, progression pathways, and the support available to students choosing vocational routes into science and industry.

Visiting a Real-World Laboratory

This connected classroom theory, with real-world applications, demonstrates how analytical science supports industry.

“It was a pleasure to see the students so eager to learn and ask questions. Watching them explore our laboratories with such enthusiasm was inspiring. It’s a great reminder that nurturing curiosity and potential is at the heart of developing future talent.” — Robbie Hand, Senior People Development Advisor.
