Women in STEM Apprenticeships: Meet Kira Little

Promoting women in STEM apprenticeships is vital for the future of scientific innovation. To celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we spoke to Kira Little, our Group ICP Apprentice at Alfred H Knight (AHK). Her journey captures the courage, curiosity, and determination required to succeed in the dynamic field of STEM.

At just 18, Kira is already making a tangible impact in our laboratories while completing her Chemical Scientist Degree Apprenticeship. Her story highlights how women in STEM apprenticeships can gain hands-on experience and real responsibility from day one.

Unlike traditional university routes, Kira’s role places her in the heart of our operations within the Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) department. This specialist team is responsible for analysing the chemical composition of materials with high precision. It is a technical, fast-paced environment that allows apprentices to develop practical expertise alongside their academic studies.

We asked Kira about her experience entering this field and how she found her footing in the laboratory.

Overcoming Perceptions about Women in STEM

“What has surprised me the most about working in STEM is how welcoming it actually is. From the outside, it can seem quite intimidating. When I first started, I was extremely anxious, thinking that there was only one way to do things or that making mistakes was frowned upon. However, I have found that it is quite the opposite. The team is very supportive and always willing to help, which makes it that much easier.”

Building Confidence in the Laboratory

“My entire team has played a crucial role in building my confidence. They have shown me that making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process. Additionally, their warm welcome when I first started helped me feel comfortable and confident in my role.”

Bridging the Gender Gap

“I believe it is essential to educate girls at a young age about the availability of apprenticeships and opportunities in STEM fields, and to encourage them to apply for these opportunities.”

Advice for Future Scientists

“My advice to young girls and women starting their careers in STEM is to be confident and determined. Always remain open-minded about the future, as you never know what might happen.”

Why Choose a STEM Apprenticeship?

Kira’s success demonstrates the value of the “earn and learn” model. Women in STEM apprenticeships benefit from immediate industry immersion, mentorship from experienced colleagues, and a clear pathway to professional accreditation.

At Alfred H Knight, we believe in providing trust and certainty not only to our clients but to our people. By supporting colleagues like Kira through lifelong learning and development, we ensure that the next generation of scientists is equipped to lead.
