Apprenticeship Career Path: Q&A with Qianna Allen

Choosing the right apprenticeship career path can be a defining step in a young professional’s career. For National Apprenticeship Week, we spoke with Qianna Allen, Safety, Health and Environment Technician Apprentice within Alfred H Knight’s (AHK) UK Health and Safety division, about her experience and development.

Here, Qianna shares her journey, challenges common misconceptions and reflects on why an apprenticeship was the right path for her. She also explores what ‘Skills for Life’ means to her.

Choosing an Apprenticeship Career Path Over University

“For me, the combination of hands-on experience and structured learning was a major factor. It allowed me to develop and practice skills while learning the theory in college. Working alongside professionals suited my learning style and helped me move closer to my career goals.”

Why Choose AHK?

Through the AHK apprenticeship programme, individuals take their first step into the industry while taking on real-world responsibilities. Apprentices learn from experienced technical specialists, gain hands-on experience, and develop the confidence needed to succeed in a professional environment.

Qianna explains: “The company focuses on developing and supporting apprentices, providing meaningful hands-on experience and helping to build confidence in the workplace. It allows apprentices to grow their skills, and with guidance from experienced professionals, creates an ideal environment for learning and development.”

Building Skills for Life

The theme ‘Skills for Life’ highlights how apprenticeships develop essential skills for their future careers. At Alfred H Knight, we believe that investing in people is investing in the future. This reflects our ongoing commitment to education and skills development for the next generation of talent.

“The ability to learn on the job and adapt to challenges is vital. Asking questions, taking feedback on board, and applying it day to day allows me to work more confidently within my role. This confidence and adaptability will help me with the rest of my career.”

Overcoming Challenges

Every apprenticeship career path involves uncertainty. Qianna says: “One challenge I had was building confidence in my own abilities. Understanding that I will not have all the answers right away is key. Asking for help will only help me improve. Mistakes are natural and will improve my overall resilience.”

Busting the Myths Around Apprenticeship Career Paths

Apprenticeships are often misunderstood as being only for school leavers or as less demanding than traditional routes. In reality, an apprenticeship career path suits anyone who values practical learning, real responsibility, and earning while developing professionally.

“Apprenticeships require commitment, time management and self-discipline because I am working while I’m learning, so a balance is required.”

Advice to Your Younger Self

“The advice I would give to my younger self is to follow my passions and goals and not worry about the opinions and expectations of others.”

We would like to thank Qianna for taking the time to answer our questions and wish her the best as she continues her journey with us at AHK.
