International Women’s Day at Alfred H Knight: Give to Gain
International Women’s Day is a global movement of reflection and progress. It promotes gender equality through shared action and meaningful change. This year’s theme, ‘Give to Gain’, encourages generosity and collaboration, and it highlights the importance of reciprocity and support.
To celebrate International Women’s Day, we invited women from across AHK’s global teams to share their personal experiences. Their stories highlight how colleagues support charities and strengthen their local communities.

Which AHK initiatives have you seen that give back to the community?
Jamine Munwela: “I’ve had the privilege of participating in a community outreach initiative, supporting Jonah Children’s Home. Our team donated school supplies, food, and other essentials. However, the most meaningful contribution came through the time we spent together with the children.
«For example, we shared a meal through a small braai, engaged in open conversations, and hosted a story time session centred around hope. As a result, this created a space where the children felt recognised, valued and encouraged. Overall, it served as a reminder of the importance of genuine connection, empathy and giving.»
Carmen Roque: «We’ve seen meaningful examples of support right here within the workplace. From contributing financially to assist a coworker facing health challenges to supporting a colleague’s small business initiative, these actions strengthened solidarity.
«Together, these gestures not only provided practical help but also fostered a warmer, more united work environment.»
What everyday actions create a more inclusive workplace?
Deepika Waje: «I believe an inclusive culture begins with active listening and mutual respect. When people feel heard, they feel valued. As a result, open communication creates a safe and supportive environment. Ultimately, this sense of belonging helps turn a workplace into a community.»
Jamine Munwela: «Inclusion is often built through small, consistent actions rather than big gestures. Simple behaviours such as actively listening, respecting different viewpoints, using inclusive language, and being mindful of our engagement with colleagues can make a significant difference.»
How can everyone help create gender parity?
Luna Zhang: «Advocate equitably for promotions and opportunities, correct gender bias and abandon gender stereotypes. Actively listening to colleagues and acknowledging others’ contributions creates a positive environment and brings greater emotional value to everyone.”
Jamine Munwela: “Regardless of role or seniority, being conscious of how we treat colleagues, encouraging confidence, and standing up for inclusivity help create an environment where gender equality can genuinely thrive.”
Deepika Waje: “While responsibilities are often shared fairly, recognising potential based on capability rather than circumstance can make a meaningful difference. When everyone feels supported and encouraged to grow, it strengthens both the individual and the organisation.”
Maryori Osorio Salas: «Respect and equal opportunity are key factors. Regardless of role, background, or seniority, everyone deserves the same chance to grow professionally and personally. Maintaining respect across all areas and providing equal opportunities in the workplace are essential steps toward achieving gender parity.»
