ARE YOU PREPARED? NEW BIOMASS FUEL STANDARDS ARE COMING

New Fuel Standards - BSL

If you produce or supply biomass or wood products on the Biomass Suppliers List (BSL), changes are coming to regulations on your material that may affect you.

From 1st April 2022, any person or business that lists their fuels on the BSL must demonstrate that they are producing fuel which meets a quality standard under a certification scheme. If they fail to do so, they may be removed from the BSL.

Schedule 4A – Regulation 47, applies to solid biomass (excluding solid biomass contained in waste) which is wood fuel, and is used to generate heat in an accredited RHI installation.

(“Wood fuel” meaning: woodchip, logs, wood pellets and wood briquettes – regardless of whether the wood will undergo any other process before burning.)

The updated legislation states that:

  • All wood pellets must meet the ENplus A1 standard (9) or an equivalent standard.
  • All other wood fuel must meet fuel quality standard EN 15234-1: 2011(10), ISO 9001: 2015(11) or EN ISO 17225-4: 2014(12) or an equivalent standard.
  • All wood-fuel must be certified by the Woodsure Certification Scheme or an equivalent certification scheme.
  • The certification scheme must provide assurance of the supply chain of the wood fuel.
