INTERNATIONAL WOMEN IN MINING DAY 2023

Whether you are the head of a mining exploration organisation or are part of a team of laboratory technicians testing samples, equity in mining is a shared responsibility.

In order to inspire future generations of women in the mining sector, it is crucial to acknowledge and celebrate the pioneering women who paved the way, as well as those currently making significant contributions throughout the mining value chain.

On this International Women in Mining Day, we took the opportunity to speak with colleagues from around the world. We asked why equity is important to them, what their personal experiences have been and the advice they have for women embarking on their careers in the mining industry.

WHY IS GENDER EQUITY SO IMPORTANT TO THE MINING INDUSTRY?

Shristi – Gender equity means an equal and fair distribution of benefits and responsibilities for both men and women. I feel gender equity has been far from equal in the mining sector due to unsanitary and unsafe conditions at work.

HOW HAS A COLLEAGUE SUPPORTED YOU?

Nosipho – I was very lucky to have a male colleague who worked with me, mentored me and helped me to understand the environment. They always encouraged me to do better so that I’m able to face whatever challenges I come across.

WHAT DOES ALFRED H KNIGHT DO TO SUPPORT GENDER DIVERSITY?

Felicia – As long as you meet the job criteria, you will be considered for the position. I feel this is so motivating for women because we see other women getting promoted to higher-ranked positions and that’s very empowering.

WHAT WOULD YOUR ADVICE BE FOR WOMEN WHO ARE STARTING THEIR CAREERS IN MINING?

Fabiola – Just go for it. There are excellent opportunities, it’s a very exciting and inspiring industry and there are lots of different opportunities for everybody.

Pearl – There is a lot to grasp and there is a lot that is completely different, but it’s a lot of fun as well. No two days are the same.

Nisha – Work with people that can mentor you and absorb as much information and knowledge as you can. Be persistent. Be positive. Bring positive energy into the job and pursue your dreams.

Khanyisile – Be confident with what you are doing and know what you are going in to do. Be confident that whatever challenges you are facing, you are going to be able to face them.

Luna – It is always great to challenge yourself as a woman and not shy away, to do anything that you can put your mind into.

Ferosa – Go out there with strength and determination. Once you’re in it, you’re in it. There’s no holding you back. There’s nothing hard about it, it’s only hard when you say it’s hard.
