Waste Wood Classification

Alfred H Knight's Waste Wood Classification services help organisations to identify if their waste wood is potentially hazardous.

What is Waste Wood Classification?

Whether you work at a skip yard, a demolition site or a waste transfer station, if you work with demolition waste wood, it is your legal duty to identify potentially hazardous waste wood and action it accordingly.

Waste Wood Classification Services consist of analysis and evaluation that can help you to determine the quantities and types of potentially hazardous waste wood arising from your activities. This enables you to process your material appropriately, either through disposal or commercial routes.

What are Potentially Hazardous Items?

Following the withdrawal of Regulatory Position Statement 250 (1st September 2023), the list of potentially hazardous materials now stretches from fence posts, decking and certain types of waste wood from pre-2007 buildings to include: barge boards, facias, soffits, wooden windows, conservatories and doors, roofing timbers, tiling/cladding battens and timber frames/joists.

This doesn’t apply to materials such as railway sleepers and telegraph poles, which are already known to be hazardous and always require specialist hazardous waste treatment.

Further use

Once you have classified your waste wood, if it is deemed not to be potentially hazardous, it may then be sent to a wood reprocessor, where it can be blended into material which can be used for IED Chapter IV compliant biomass energy plants or the manufacture of panel boards.

Should your waste wood be deemed Hazardous, it must be consigned using a Hazardous consignment note. These items should then be segregated and only when segregation is not practical can they be blended with a non-hazardous wood load.
